Description

Caspian House is a Grade II listed building located at 61 East Parade, on the corner with Peckover Street. This impressive ashlar sandstone warehouse and office building was constructed in 1871 and designed by Eli Milnes. It stands five storeys tall with a semi-basement. The building features a reeded plinth and alternating deeply rebated, pulvinated, and reeded courses at the basement level. A deep pulvinated band course marks the raised ground floor, which also has reeded courses throughout.

Moulded sill courses are present on the first and second floors, and the building is topped with a deep moulded eaves cornice supported by modillion brackets. The bevelled corner, which houses a circular stairwell, is accented by foliate capped pilasters with rusticated shafts on the upper floors. The first-floor corner window is framed by a carved architrave surround and has console brackets supporting a segmental pediment topped with an iron finial. Above the doorway, there is a balcony resting on large carved consoles. The doorway itself features rustication with deep reveals, a rinceaux carved doorhead, and a roll moulded arch adorned with vine leaves, shell, and scrollwork in the tympanum. The basement windows, like others in the area, are fitted with finely wrought iron grilles featuring abstract geometric designs.
