Description

This is a large warehouse with chambers, situated on a corner plot with East Parade. Built in the 1870s - specifically 1870-71 - it is an example of Scottish Baronial architecture, a contrast to the Italianate style typical of the "Little Germany" precinct. The building was commissioned by Mr Walter Dunlop at a cost of £8,500 and was designed by George Corson of Leeds, rather than a Bradford architect. The warehouse has three main storeys, an attic, and a basement. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar. The corner of the building is chamfered up to the second floor, creating an overhang. Features include bold rope moulded stringcourses, weathered sill courses, deep stepped corbelled eaves, and four stone gabled dormers set in the parapet. The roof is covered in steep-pitched slate tiles with crow-stepped gables, and grouped chimney stacks flank the structure. A projecting central bay is treated as a tower, with bartizan turrets with pointed slate roofs at attic level. A tall doorway, with weathered coping stepped up over as a label, leads to the basement, above which is a canted oriel bay window. Most windows are single or paired, with roll moulded edges to the reveals. Gothic cast iron area railings are present. False stone cannon water spouts adorn the tower. The return wall facing East Parade features flanking crow-stepped gables and simpler detailing, along with gabled dormers. A long range of ornate glazed attic lights and skylights runs along the roof behind the Peckover Street front.
