37, Chapel Street

No. 37 Chapel Street is a large warehouse and office building dating from around 1880, located on a corner site with Scoresby Street. This tall five-storey block is constructed of sandstone with ashlar dressings, following a typical design of the period. The windows are set back in shallow vertical panels that extend from the first to the third floors, highlighting the structural load-bearing wall planes. The ground floor features V-grooved ashlar with a sill band, while a block bracket cornice is positioned beneath the attic storey, complemented by shallow gutter eaves cornice. The building is topped with tall corniced chimneys. The ashlar lintels above the windows on the first to third floors continue over the dividing strips with flush ashlar bands. There is a large, plain, flat-arched entrance on Chapel Street and a round-headed driveway with an archivolt keyed arch and paired lights set in a panel above. The return front is similar in style.
