Description
This is a circa 1912-14 wool warehouse and office, likely a refronting of an earlier chapel. It is a three-storey building with a basement, featuring a five-bay ashlar front with Neo-Greek detailing. The ground floor has an entablature and a moulded sill band to the second floor, with the frieze incorporating a Greek key pattern. An impost string acts as a bed mould for the projecting, bracketed cornice above, and the parapet is flanked by low, blind, panelled attic sections with swept supports. Pilastraded windows and a doorway with a waggonway are present on the ground floor, sheltered by the entablature. The first-floor windows have splayed architrave surrounds decorated with rosettes, while the second-floor windows are similarly framed, with incised bordered panels in the wall spaces between. Diagonal panel railings between dies enclose the basement area. The ground-floor windows and doorway feature frosted glass incorporating both Neo-Greek and Art Nouveau elements. Second-floor windows have diagonally crossed glazing bars. The elevation is carefully detailed and of a high standard, making a significant contribution to the streetscape.
