Description
The gateway and railings to the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield were built around 1900 and are made of ashlar and wrought iron. The structure features a pair of tall square ashlar gate piers, which have moulded bases, panelled sides, and a deep entablature topped with a shaped cap and a ball. Between these piers are ornate wrought-iron gates. On either side of the main gates are single pedestrian gates of a similar design, flanked by shorter square gate piers that match the main piers.
To the right, there is a short section of railing on an ashlar base wall, which ends in a square pier with a moulded base and cap. To the left, railings extend along an ashlar base wall, following Thompson Road and ascending the hill to the edge of the Botanical Gardens. These railings are divided into panels by taller square iron piers with pyramidal caps and ornate supports. At the end of this section, there is a square ashlar pier with a moulded base and cap, also topped with a ball.
