Railings With Gates And Lamps, Royal Circus Gardens, Edinburgh

The railings with gates and lamps at Royal Circus Gardens in Edinburgh date from the early 19th century, with some later additions. They surround circular-plan gardens and adjacent gardens to the east and west. The railings are primarily made of ashlar dwarf walls, which are broached at the central gardens and feature saddleback copes. The northern and southern sections of the central gardens have roll-moulded copes, while the flanking thoroughfare is chamfered. The cast-iron railings are set diagonally to the street and are adorned with fleur-de-lis and quasi-Maltese Cross finials. There are pairs of polygonal posts with pyramidal caps next to the walls, flanking the northwest and southeast entrances to the thoroughfare. Some later rectilinear-patterned railings, with shaped ends to the balusters, are located in the central panels of the gardens to the east and west. A pall stone is positioned at the northwest corner of the east garden, and there is an ashlar wall to the northwest of the west garden, raised to the right of the center. A former gate is centered on the east elevation of the west garden and features remnants of a honeysuckle motif at its base. Additionally, some cast-iron lamps with glass globes are set in the copes of the west garden.
