Gateway with attached plinth wall and ironwork screen. Gateway c1630; refixed and screen added probably in mid C18. For the Wentworth estate. Limestone gateway; dressed sandstone plinth wall and ashlar piers; wrought- iron screen. Set in straight line with south-facing gateway linked via plinth wall and single ironwork panel to south-east corner of south wing of Wentworth Woodhouse west front (q.v.); 3 ironwork panels to east of gateway with linking plinth wall and intermediate piers and end pier. Gateway in Artisan Mannerist style after a design by Dietterlin of c1584 (English Heritage). Square-headed opening flanked by fluted Doric pilasters with alternate blocking; panel beneath, and scrollwork within, tympanum of open pediment surmounted by pedestals and more scrolls. Deeply-coursed plinth wall links corniced ashlar piers. Excellent ironwork panels with bars interspersed with upthrusting barbed spikes; elaborate frieze crested by scrollwork to spiked and foliate finials.
