Description

The perimeter wall of Wentworth Garden Centre, which was formerly part of the kitchen garden of Wentworth Woodhouse, dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. Constructed for the Wentworth estate, the wall features coursed sandstone on two external faces and red brick elsewhere, with ashlar-dressed openings. It forms a rectangular enclosure that stands between 3 to 4 metres high, with original openings on three sides and 20th-century openings on the southern wall.

The principal entrance on the west wall includes a large six-panel door set within a Tuscan aedicule, framed by a band-rusticated and corniced ashlar panel. This door has a simple corniced surround visible from Hague Lane, which is complemented by another blocked opening to the north. The east wall features a principal entrance with tall, corniced, ashlar gate piers that now hold 20th-century iron gates, lacking their original lead statues. There is also a basket-arched opening to the north. The north wall includes a simple, corniced doorway at the east end and an archway at the west end, with the stone external face marked by the gable profiles of demolished buildings. Some ashlar copings have been replaced with concrete. The east wall marks the end of the vista from the west front of Wentworth Woodhouse, while the west wall faces the avenue leading to the Church of the Holy Trinity.
