Description

Camellia House is an early 19th-century building that incorporates a mid-18th-century section at the rear, originally constructed for the Wentworth Estate. The facade is made of ashlar sandstone with brick returns and features a glazed roof. The central part of the 18th-century section is built from limestone and has a slate roof. The building is single storey with a main front that has three groups of three bays.

At the front, there is a plinth and stone steps leading up to the central three bays, which project forward. Flanking these are four Ionic columns that support full-height casements with glazing bars, which include a door. The outer bays are fully glazed with 40-pane sash windows, separated by Ionic pilasters that are doubled at each end. The facade is finished with a plain frieze and cornice, although the balustrade above bay six is missing, and the original statues and ornaments have been removed.

The rear of the building features a three-bay pediment with low side wings that are set back. It has a plinth, rusticated quoins, and a central bay. There is a part-glazed door beneath a keyed round arch, flanked by columns with alternate blocking. The outer bays have sash windows beneath keyed round arches, with an architrave and cornice that project above the keystones and columns, and a plain tympanum. Each side wing contains a six-panel door flanked by sash windows with glazing bars, flat arches, a cornice, and a monoclinal roof with a hipped end.

Inside, camellia beds are located on either side of the pedimented doorway leading to the rear room. The 18th-century section was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the re-survey.
