Description
The Wentworth War Memorial commemorates the First World War and the Second World War, constructed between 1922 and designed by Sir Bache Cunard, with sculpture by Messrs Clarkson & Co of Rotherham. It is built of white Darley Dale stone.
The memorial takes the form of a Celtic wheel cross set upon a tall, tapering, octagonal shaft, which stands on a deep, octagonal double pedestal, itself set upon a wide, four-stepped octagonal base. The memorial is located diagonally facing the junction of the B6090 and Hague Lane. It is constructed from smooth ashlar stone blocks. The Celtic wheel cross has roll-moulded edges, relief-carved interwoven Celtic patterns, and a central boss. The front of the upper section of the octagonal double pedestal bears the dedication "TO THE / GLORIOUS DEAD WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY / 1914-1919," in applied lead lettering. The left-hand face includes the dates 1939 - / 1945. The lower section of the pedestal bears the names of the deceased, also in applied lead lettering. Those who died in the First World War are listed on the front and two flanking faces, while five names on the left-hand face record those who died in the Second World War. The pedestal is set on a wide octagonal base consisting of four steps.
The memorial stands within a small, approximately triangular enclosure, enclosed by a low wall built of coursed stone with semi-circular coping to the rear and wrapping around the corners. In front of the enclosure is a curved, chamfered stone kerb flanked by two square piers with rounded caps. A wide, stone-flagged path leads to the memorial, which is set within an octagonal area of stone-flag paving. A chain fence with steel posts, erected in the 1990s as a replacement for a fence removed in the 1940s, is not considered to be of special interest.
