Description

This listing describes the railings, gate piers, and gate located at the front of Number 9, the Mechanics Institute, dating from the mid-19th century. The structure features a coursed sandstone plinth wall and ashlar gate piers, with iron railings extending approximately 25 meters in total length, including a central gate. The stone end pier on the right has a chamfered plinth and a pyramidal cap, while the plinth wall has chamfered coping. The railings are sturdy with a hexagonal section and simple finials. The matching double gate is supported by square monolithic piers topped with a moulded cap. Note that the left end pier is missing. This structure is included for its group value.
