Description
This is a 19th-century milepost located approximately 70 metres east of the junction with Hoober Field Road in Brampton Bierlow. Made by Brayshaw and Booth from Liversedge, it is constructed of cast iron and fixed on a sandstone pillar. The upper panel features raised lettering that reads "BRAMPTON BIERLOW & HOOTON/ROBERTS ROAD/BRAMPTON/BIERLOW." The left side lists distances to various locations: "DONCASTER/12 MILES/GONISBORO/7 MILES/HOOTON/ROBERTS/4¾ MILES/MEXBORO/4¼ MILES/SWINTON/2¾ MILES." The right side indicates distances to "BARNSLEY/9¾ MILES/WENTWORTH/2 MILES." At the time of the resurvey, the milepost was displaced and lying in a ditch behind the grass verge. It is part of a well-preserved sequence of mileposts along this route.
