Description
This is a milepost located in the pavement in front of number 10 on Doncaster Road in Conisbrough. It dates from the late 19th century and was made by Brayshaw and Booth of Liversedge. The milepost is made of cast iron and is fixed on a sandstone pillar. It features angled sides and a sloping top plate beneath a round-headed panel. The raised lettering on the upper panel indicates "BRAMPTON BIERLOW & HOOTON/ROBERTS ROAD/SWINTON BRANCH/CONISBORO." The left side lists distances to Barnsley (16¼ miles), Wentworth (8½ miles), Swinton (3¾ miles), and Mexborough (2¼ miles). The right side shows distances to Doncaster (6 miles) and Conisbrough (½ mile). This milepost is part of a series, many of which still exist in the Rotherham district.
