Description
The drinking fountain and lamp standard at the southern entrance to Coronation Park was built in 1911 and manufactured by George Wright Ltd of Rotherham. It is made of cast iron.
The ornate structure features a shaped, octagonal base that includes the maker’s name: GEO. WRIGHT LTD / BURTON WEIR / ROTHERHAM. At the front, there is a narrow dog trough set into the ground, angled around the base. Above this, the main trough is D-shaped with a rounded lip. In the center of the trough stands an octagonal column, which has a round-arched panel on each face. The front panel is inscribed with the words: CORONATION / OF / KING / GEORGE / V / 22ND JUNE / 1911 / THIS / LAMP / & FOUNTAIN / WAS / ERECTED / BY / PUBLIC / SUBSCRIPTION. The column features an ogee top adorned with alternating panels of fleur de lys motifs and rises as a lamp standard, which has decorative shell motifs; however, the lantern is missing.
