Description
Denaby War Memorial commemorates those who served in the First and Second World Wars, though its exact date is unknown.
Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the memorial features a square column with a square plinth and a stepped square cap topped by a stylized circular lamp. It stands on a platform made up of three octagonal steps, with the ground level sloping down to the south, making the northern edge of the bottom step flush with the surrounding paving.
The column's faces are incised with a simple Latin cross design, with three sides mostly covered by bronze plaques that bear dedications and the names of the fallen in raised lettering. The southern plaque is inscribed with the dedication "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/OF DENABY WHO GAVE/THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF/1914 TO 1918," listing 81 names with initials and surnames. Below this plaque is a smaller plaque with two inscribed and gilded names. The eastern plaque, a replacement from the early 21st century, carries the dedication "TO THE MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE/OF DENABY WHO GAVE/THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF/1914 TO 1918," with 82 names listed beneath. The northern plaque honors those who died in the Second World War, stating "TO THE MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE/OF DENABY WHO GAVE/THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF/1939 TO 1945," and includes 57 names, with the exception of one woman, Pearl Dunhill Jeffcote, who is noted as having died on 2 June 1948 in Montagu Hospital, Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Below this plaque is an additional name in bronze.
