Description

No 14 on Cortworth Lane is a house built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from deeply-coursed sandstone and features a facsimile stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and includes two first-floor windows with a wing at the rear. Large quoins are present, and the front wall has been extensively rebuilt.

The central entrance consists of a part-glazed door that is flanked by four-pane sash windows, all of which have projecting sills and lintels that are tooled as voussoirs. Above the door, there is an inscribed plaque set within a stone architrave. The flanking windows on the ground floor mirror those above but have flat arches. The end stacks are made of renewed brick.

The inscription on the plaque commemorates W. John Wentworth Fitzwilliam, who was born on August 7, 1852, and died on September 11, 1889. It notes that this boys' home was transferred to the Gordon Boys Home in 1900. Fitzwilliam, the son of the 6th Earl, was tragically killed in a riding accident at Wentworth Woodhouse. The building served as a memorial to him and provided a home for boys under Fitzwilliam's guardianship in the late 19th century.

There is an attached outbuilding to the left, but it is not of special interest.
