Description
Mausoleum Lodge is a lodge built around 1790, likely designed by John Carr of York for the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam. It features ashlar sandstone construction and a slate roof, with an octagonal shape and two storeys, plus a single-storey wing at the rear. The lodge has a stepped plinth and half-round steps leading up to part-glazed, panelled double doors, which are topped by a fanlight with radial glazing bars in tear-shaped lights. An impost band and an archivolt with a console-shaped keystone frame the door, which is flanked by round-headed niches and has recessed panels above the band. The cornice serves as a gutter, and the hipped roof is finished with lead flashings and an octagonal stack. At the rear, there is another octagonal stack at the eaves with a tall fluted pot. Each side has a tall round-headed window with thick glazing bars and inset opening lights, along with a keyed archivolt similar to the door. The first floor is positioned at the mid-height of the windows. This lodge serves as the entrance to the Rockingham Mausoleum and reflects architectural features typical of the Flitcroft period.
