HUNSHELF DEAN HEAD LANE (east side), Hunshelf Barn approx. 5 metres to south of Dean Head Farmhouse (formerly listed as barn west of Dean Head Farmhouse)

Barn. C16 and late C18 or early C19. Timber-frame encased in coursed, squared rubble with stone slate roof. 5 internal bays. Square-headed cart-entry to right with wooden lintel. Three small entrances to left (2 blocked). Two square pitching holes to left. Steep roof pitch. Plain rear wall. Later additions to left and right not of special interest. Interior: 5 complete frames, the 5th against the right end wall. Heavily jowelled posts support principal rafter trusses with struts. Large arched braces from posts to tie-beams and to purlins. The latter are smaller in the entrance bay to give headroom. Collared rafters.
