Description

This barn, located approximately 5 metres south of Dean Head Farmhouse, dates from the 16th century and the late 18th or early 19th century. It features a timber frame encased in coursed, squared rubble with a stone slate roof. The barn has five internal bays and includes a square-headed cart entry on the right with a wooden lintel. To the left, there are three small entrances, two of which are blocked, and two square pitching holes. The roof has a steep pitch and the rear wall is plain. There are later additions on the left and right that are not of special interest.

Inside, the barn contains five complete frames, with the fifth frame against the right end wall. Heavily jowelled posts support principal rafter trusses that include struts. Large arched braces connect the posts to the tie-beams and purlins, which are smaller in the entrance bay to allow for headroom. The rafters are collared.
