Description

Berton Under Edge Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two houses. It dates from the 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century and mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar, featuring ashlar dressings, and has a stone slate roof. It includes a single brick stack and two stone stacks, along with a single gable that is coped with ashlar and has kneelers. The corners of the building have quoins.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. The south front has an off-centre doorway with a half-glazed door. To the left, there is a 20th-century casement window, and to the right, a narrow casement window, followed by a two-light casement. Above, there is a narrow central casement flanked by two-light casements. The west front features a projecting gabled wing on the right, which has a former three-light mullion window that has lost one of its mullions. The side wall has a blocked doorway and a two-light casement above it. There is a slightly set-back corner with quoins and a 17th-century four-centred arched doorway with a moulded ashlar surround, above which is a 20th-century casement. To the left, there is a blocked single-light chamfered window from the 17th century, a three-light casement, and a smaller three-light casement with a door beyond. Above, there are two and three-light casements.

On the east front, there is a slightly projecting wing on the left with a three-panel door. To the left of this, there is a pair of plain sash windows with a single plain sash window beyond, all linked by a raised lintel band. Above, there is a similar arrangement of windows. To the right, there is a three-light glazing bar window, and above it, there are two tripartite sashes, with the left one set in a flush ashlar surround. Beyond this is a lower service wing.

Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered beams and an exceptionally unusual roof structure in the southeast corner, which includes a type of central pendant post.
