Description
This barn, located approximately 50 metres east of Sheepcote Farmhouse, dates from the 16th century or earlier and has been altered over time. It features a timber frame with cladding made of magnesian limestone rubble and quoins, topped with a graduated stone slate roof, although the upper level has been replaced with Welsh slate. The barn has a rectangular five-bay plan, with a wagon entrance in the centre of the west side beneath a slightly raised roof. There are four half-height buttresses and two small square openings at different levels on the left side.
The north gable wall indicates a former steeper roof pitch at the lower level and contains different masonry at the apex. It also features triangular breathers on two levels, a raised doorway in the centre, and another door on the right-hand side.
Inside, the barn has four post-and-truss frames with intermediate supports resembling raked crutches that rise from the wall-plates to the aisle-plates. There are braces from the posts to the tie-beams and curved braces from the posts to the aisle-plates. The king-post roof trusses include curved longitudinal braces extending to the ridge. Some carpenters' marks, starting with the number "11," can be found on the frame nearest to the south end.
