Description

The garden house, or pavilion, located at the north end of the west terrace of Ledston Hall, dates from around 1720 and was re-roofed in the late 18th century. It was likely designed and built by William Thornton for Lady Bettie Hastings. The structure features a plinth made of magnesian limestone rubble, handmade brick with ashlar dressings, and a hipped slate roof. It has a rectangular plan and consists of a single cell that projects from the outer side of the elevated terrace.

This tall, single-storey building is designed in a classical style, primarily constructed of brick, with a prominent stone Venetian entrance that serves as the main feature. It includes a dentilled cornice and a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath the hipped roof. The left side wall has a tall sashed window with a keystone set in a gauged brick flat arch. The rear of the building features a round-headed doorway leading to the basement, with a similar window above it. Inside, the garden house has a stone flagged floor made of hexagons with small square spacers, and the ceiling is adorned with moulded coving.
