Description
This is a barn located 10 metres west of Sheep House Farm, dating from the post-Mediaeval period. It is constructed from rubble and features double Roman tile roofs with stout slates at the eaves, raised coped verges, and saddlestones. The barn has a gabled design with nine bays and varies in height from one to two storeys due to the sloping site.
On the south elevation, the right side is single storey and includes two plain doors, one of which has a chamfered surround, along with two vents and a swept eaves dormer. To the left, there is a part-blocked entry with chamfered jambs under a timber lintel, and a similar pitching door above it, accompanied by a buttress. The east gable is obscured by a single storey lean-to.
The north elevation features a 20th-century window inserted into an earlier opening. To the right, in the two-storey section, there is a vent set in large chamfered blocks, followed by a blocked small cast entry under a timber lintel that is also chamfered with run-out stops. Two inserted vents flank a blocked door with large quoins. The plain west gable has massive quoins, owl holes, and is buttressed to the south with stepped footings.
Inside, the barn has a nine-bay roof with trusses that include principals with tie-beams and collars, some of which are cambered, along with lower angle struts. There are two rows of purlins and, in some cases, a subsidiary tenoned wall plate. Four bays retain pairs of convex wind braces.
