Description

The Old Rectory and Rectory Cottage are two houses, originally a rectory, dating from the late 17th century. The building was largely rebuilt and extended to the north in 1852. The south-facing garden elevation comprises the original 17th-century section, constructed of random rubble with freestone quoins and dressings, and covered by a pantiled roof. It features ashlar stacks with cornices and has a single storey with attics arranged in three steep gables, each topped with finials. There are three windows with two and three lights, featuring ovolo moulded mullions, surrounds, and dripmoulds. A door is positioned to the right, set within a moulded surround with a four-centred head. The 19th-century extension is centrally located and built of coursed and squared freestone with a slate roof concealed behind a parapet. It rises to two storeys and attics, with two steep gables. The facade has three bays, with two-storey canted bay windows in the outer bays. Cross windows with ovolo moulded surrounds are located on the ground floor, while two-light casements are in the attic. The road elevation of the main house displays five bays, featuring cross windows and two stepped gables on the parapet. A central, projecting two-storey porch is present, characterized by a curvilinear gable and a datestone. A plank door is set within a four-centre hooded surround. The original 17th-century section retains a single gable and a projecting wing to the right, incorporating two pointed-arch windows. Rectory Cottage is attached to the north and has two storeys with two two-light casement windows. Dormer windows are situated at the rear. A central plank door, set within a plain surround and beneath a flat stone hood supported by brackets, provides entry.
