Description

This barn, located approximately 20 metres to the south-west of the main house, dates to the early 17th century, or possibly earlier. It is constructed of rubble stone with a timber frame and a stone slate roof. The barn is arranged with an aisle, comprising four bays. It features quoins. A central cart entry has been heightened and given a gable, with quoins. An outshut on the right-hand side has a cat-slide roof and incorporates two Tudor-arched, chamfered, quoined doorways (one to the right and one central), and a window with a plain stone surround on the left. The right-hand side of the roof is hipped. The rear elevation features an opposing cart entry, which has been heightened and blocked; a slit vent is situated to the right of this. The walling to the left has been rebuilt, but retains a chamfered, quoined doorway to the far left. The right return has been rebuilt in brick during the 20th century, with openings having cement lintels. Inside, the rear cart entry’s stone side walls support the trusses. The remaining bays feature jowelled-headed posts with braces to aisle ties, wall plates and tie beams, with some of the braces curved and chamfered. The roof incorporates queen-strut trusses and butt purlins.
