Description

SOWERBY BRIDGE BURNLEY ROAD SE 0224 and SE 0324 (west side), Luddenden Foot 8/20 Walls, gates and gate piers in front of United Reformed 11.7.80 Church and attached railings flanking entrances II GV Wall, 3 pairs of gate piers, gates and attached railings flanking entrances. 1859. Coursed stone and ashlar, cast-iron gates and railings. Gatepiers flanking entrances to church. The Manse and Chapel House: monolithic ashlar piers with necking, cornices and pyramidal caps. Dwarf walls: ramped with pointed ashlar coping; railings removed. Central gates: heavy ironwork; bottom rail of circles; lower panel with scroll and leaf motifs; single and paired bars with vase, roundel and acanthus-type motifs and bulbous finials. Railings, flanking balcony to The Manse and to Chapel House: single and paired bars set on roundels; bulbous arrow finials; gate posts have acanthus bases, entasis and knob finials; standards fluted with entasis.
