Number 1 Winder at Ledston Luck Colliery, with garden wall and gate

Number 1 Winder at Ledston Luck Colliery, built in 1911, is a winding house located on the eastern side of Ridge Road in Ledston, Kippax. This building is the western of a pair and features red brick construction with sandstone dressings, and its roof is concealed by a parapet. It has a square plan and appears to be two storeys tall, designed in the Free Classical style with a symmetrical façade.

The building has a sandstone ashlar plinth and a slightly-recessed central section flanked by corner pylons. At the center, there is a wide semicircular archway with banded convex moulding that frames a segmental-headed doorway with double doors. Above this doorway is a six-light mullioned window, which is divided into three pairs by triangular king mullions that rise from corbels below the sill and terminate in block corbels at a moulded cornice. A high parapet above this window features a central shouldered panel inscribed with 'A D 1911'.

Each corner pylon has a recessed center with a three-stage, six-light window beneath an apron, and above this, the parapet features a raised panel adorned with swags. The left (north) side of the building includes openings for the drive cables to the winding gear, while the south side has a three-stage, fifteen-light window, and the rear has a six-light window.

In front of the building, there is a rectangular garden enclosed by a brick wall with stone coping, which has two steps leading down to a similar front wall that frames a gate with wrought-iron gates in an Art Nouveau style.
