Description

Kippax House is a house that was later used as a public house and has been subdivided into apartments as of 2016. It dates from around 1700 and has been altered over time. The building is constructed from magnesian limestone blocks with raised rusticated quoins and has a roof made of composition pantiles. It features a rectangular double-depth plan, is two storeys high, and has six bays in a classical style that is almost symmetrical. The facade is now rendered and colour-washed, with the first-floor band enclosed by a continuous horizontal panel created by added bands above and below the windows.

The doorway, located in the fourth bay and now enclosed by a wooden rectangular porch, has an architrave with pilasters, moulded imposts, and a cornice. The windows are twelve-pane sashed with raised surrounds, except for the third window on the first floor, which has a shouldered architrave and a rectangular panel with a moulded surround beneath its sill. There is a moulded cornice behind the gutter, and the low-pitched hipped roof has chimneys at each end of the short central ridge, although the left chimney has been cut down.

The rear of the building, which may have been the original front, is made of ashlar and has a hacked-off first-floor band. It consists of five bays, with the doorway slightly offset to the right. This doorway and the window above it both have shouldered architraves and moulded cornices, and the doorway is also covered by a porch similar to the one at the front. The windows at the rear are sashed without glazing bars. There have been later additions at each end that are not included in this listing.

Inside, the partition walls have been removed, but moulded plaster cornices and ceiling decorations in Rococo style remain, particularly in the rear rooms.
