Description
Newton Farm Steading and Gatepiers, built around 1840, consists of a pair of symmetrical rectangular farm buildings that are one and a half storeys high, with central gables on either side of the entrance piers leading to the courtyard. The buildings are constructed from snecked and dressed sandstone, featuring ashlar long and short quoins, projecting sills, and crow-stepped gables.
The northwest building has a southwest (principal) elevation that includes a centrally placed sliding machinery door and a rectangular window at the gable head. The crow steps are tooled to form the gable end, with beaked skewputts at the front and on each flanking end. A cast-iron weathervane sits atop the building. The single storey has a door on the right leading to the left flank, with another door on the left return. There is also a rectangular window on the right flank, an oculus at the gable head, and a chimney at the left rear.
The southeast building features a southwest (principal) elevation that forms a multi-gabled L-shaped complex. The central gable end has a rectangular window on the ground floor with a projecting sill, along with vertically placed oculi at the gable head. The crowsteps are tooled to form the gable end, and there are beaked skewputts at the front and on each flanking end, with chimneys breaking through the left side of the roof. This single storey has a window off-centre to the right on the left flank and a further door to the left of the left return. There is also a rectangular window on the right flank.
The rear elevation features a partially converted H-plan block extending to the northeast, topped with a piended slate roof, which was not visible in 2000. Most windows have 8-pane timber horizontal fixed glazing, with some later infill. The piended slate roof includes original Carron cast-iron roof lights with central astragals, mostly covered with lead ridging, though some areas have terracotta ridge tiles. The rainwater goods are later additions.
Inside, the northwest building is used for storing implements and machinery, while the southeast building has been converted for office and domestic use.
The gatepiers are made of coursed tooled square red sandstone blocks, topped with grey square stone copes and pyramid capitals. The gates are currently missing.
