Description
Newton Dovecot, located at Newton House in Millerhill, is a 16th-century, three-stage circular tower that was later converted into a dovecot. The structure is built from coursed rubble.
On the northwest elevation, there is a stone entrance that leads to a vaulted basement, which features blinded shot holes that are remnants from a battle or siege. An external stone staircase provides access to the second stage, allowing entry to the upper stage from the inside.
The basement level has three blinded shot holes, and there are gun loops on the northwest elevation. The dovecot is topped with a later conical slate roof, which is adorned with a metal ball and spike finial.
The interior, not seen since 2000, features both upper stages containing 367 nest holes made from vertical partitions of red sandstone arranged in 13 tiers.
