Description
The Farben Works is a former factory that was part of a worsted spinning and dyeing complex, built in 1914. It was designed by Harding and Toppott of Leicester for W.P. Skevington. The building features red brick and glazed brick with a reinforced concrete frame, and it showcases classical architectural style. It stands four storeys tall and has a five-window range on the first and second floors, consisting of paired and recessed 6/6 sash windows with a decorative band between them. The third floor has ten 4/4 sash windows, topped with a dentil cornice and a parapet above. The ground floor, characterized by its glazed brick walling, includes entry doors on the left, windows on the right, and a central entrance framed by a round arch with a cartouche inscribed "AD 1914." Monumental brackets support a decorative band that runs along the front of the building. The left side has blind brick panels, while the right side features windows similar to those on the front. The interior has not been inspected. This well-detailed building was added as an extension to the Frisby Jarvis Building and, along with the main part and the Slater Street School, forms a significant group in this area of Leicester.
