Description
The Canal Bridge, built in 1879 for the Midland Railway Company, is a Grade II listed structure. This bridge features a combination of cast iron and wrought iron, supported by rock-faced ashlar and brick abutments. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, it has two arches with a central rock-faced ashlar pier that includes curved end supports. The abutments are also made of rock-faced ashlar and feature square stone piers topped with pyramidal caps. Each of the four-centred arches consists of seven cast iron spans, reinforced with wrought iron bracing tie rods that display Tudor rose bosses. The outer faces of the arches are adorned with Gothic tracery in the spandrels, and the bridge is finished with a pierced iron balustrade.
