Description

59 Highcross Street is a large town house built in the late 18th century. It features a red brick exterior and a slate roof. The layout includes a central entrance hall with stairs leading to the rear and a service area on the left, which was converted into a separate dwelling in the early to mid-19th century. The house stands three storeys tall.

The exterior has a five-window range that is regular and was originally symmetrical. It includes a moulded eaves cornice and a plat band. All windows are set under wedge brick arches, with twelve-pane hornless sashes on the first floor and nine-pane sashes on the second floor. The ground floor has a much altered shop front, with two renewed twelve-pane sash windows to the right of the central doorway, which has bricked-in side panels beneath a large semi-circular traceried fanlight. The left return features unhorned sash windows and a slightly projecting stepped porch, with a moulded doorway and a plain glazed fanlight above a six-panel door. The right-hand wall has been rebuilt.

The interior, which was partly inspected, includes a dog-leg stair with moulded tread ends, stick balusters, and turned newels. There are deeply chamfered ceiling beams, some cornices, and a simple marble fireplace surround on the first floor. The attic has a gypsum floor.
