Description

The Old Grammar School, formerly known as the Free School and now occupied by Barton Coaches, was built in 1573 as Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School. It was extensively restored and altered at a later date. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with a late 16th-century tile roof that is steeply pitched and features gabled ends. Five hipped dormers have been removed. The two-storey facade has four rectangular windows, each with three lights and two spaces, and features plaques with inscriptions that have been restored. The windows are set within cement-rendered stone frames. A smaller plaque is also present. The end walls are cement-rendered, and the building has a rectangular plan.
