Description
Nos 21 and 23 on High Cross Street are early 18th century buildings that have been stuccoed. They feature a heavy moulded modillion eaves cornice and a steep-pitched slate roof with gable ends. The buildings are two storeys high and have two windows: the left-hand first floor has a sash window with glazing bars, while the right-hand first floor has a new two-light casement window. The ground floor has a mid-19th century shop front with two plate glass windows, an entablature with a dentilled cornice, and pilasters, along with a central carriageway. The north end wall includes stone rubble remains of the 18th century Borough Gaol, which once adjoined the buildings. At the rear, there is a brick wing featuring an 18th century wood mullion/transom window. An early print indicates that the date 1717 is associated with the establishment of Morgans Locksmith, which is still located at No 21.
