Description

St Martin's Cathedral, originally the Parish Church of St Martin until it became a cathedral in 1927, is a significant building that dates from the 12th to the 15th centuries but has undergone considerable alterations and restorations in the 19th century. This large church features a nave, chancel, chancel chapels, north and south aisles, an outer south aisle, a west crossing tower, and a spire, along with north and south porches.

The mid-13th century north and south arcades are notable, as is the outer south arcade from the 13th to 14th centuries. The nave was lengthened in the 15th century, and the crossing tower with its tall spire, designed in the Early English style, was completed in 1861 and 1867 by architect Raphael Brandon, replacing the medieval spire. The north aisle was restored in 1882 by Street, while the south aisle was restored in 1896 by Pearson. The chancel chapels were rebuilt in 1865, the south porch was added in 1897 by Bodley, and a north timber porch was constructed in 1862.

Inside the cathedral, there are several notable monuments. In the north aisle, there is a memorial to John Whatton and his wives from 1656, signed by Joshua Marshall. The chancel features a Rococo style bust on a large pedestal with relief carving dedicated to Gabriel Newton, created in 1746. In the south chapel, there is a standing figure of Hope with an anchor, designed by architect John Johnson, sculpted by John Bacon the younger in 1814.

St Martin's Cathedral, along with Nos 2 to 12 (even) and the Guildhall, forms a group, and it also groups with Nos 3 to 7 (odd) St Martin's East.
