Description

This is a former shoe factory, built in 1901 and later altered, located on Tudor Road in Leicester. It was designed by Charles Dorman of Northampton and is constructed in an Edwardian Baroque style. The building is of red brick with painted dressings and slate hipped roofs. It features a chamfered plinth, a moulded first floor band, and a dentilated eaves cornice. Curved recessed corners are topped by small cupolas with ball finials.

The main facade has a seventeen-window front arranged in a 1:6:3:6:1 format. A slightly projecting centrepiece includes a round headed archway with pairs of Composite columns and block rustication, supporting an open segment that links to the flanking single sash windows with round heads. Above this is a three-light cross casement window with paired Doric pilaster surrounds and flanking single light casements, all with double keystones. The building features a central clock with a strapwork surround and pairs of flanking pilasters supporting a segmental pediment, with urn finials either side.

To the left of the central section are three large four-light cross casements, above six glazing bar sashes separated by Doric columns, and then a single three-light cross casement in a slightly projecting rusticated surround topped by a large segmental pediment. To the right are three semi-circular windows, two with three windows above and one with three windows above, also above six glazing bar sashes separated by Doric columns, and culminating in a single three-light cross casement in a slightly projecting rusticated surround topped by a large segmental pediment.

The facade facing Nugent Street has a twenty-window front with three- and four-light cross casements, including a round arched cart entrance with a brick rusticated surround and painted keystone, and four basement windows. Four segmental pediments are located above. The Vernon Street facade, with a twenty-three window front, also has three-, four-, and five-light cross casements, with taller ground floor windows, some incorporating inserted access doors, and four segmental pediments above. A square chimney is located on the rear of the building.
