Description
The Frisby Jarvis Building is a former worsted spinning mill constructed in 1867, with an office block extension added in 1881. Both sections were designed for William Thompson and Sons by the Leicester architects Shenton and Baker. The building features red brick with moulded and cut brick dressings, as well as blue brick, coloured tile, and stone dressings. It has slate hipped roofs and side stacks, showcasing an Italianate palazzo style characterized by a prominent and elaborately bracketed cornice.
The structure stands four storeys tall and has a 21-window range on the first, second, and third floors, featuring metal framed windows. The first-floor windows are casements with round-arched heads, while those on the upper floors have segmental arches, all adorned with gauged brick heads and key blocks. The ground floor windows are similar but include elaborate cast-iron grilles on the lower part. A three-window section on the centre right projects forward and is accentuated by rusticated corner pilasters and tripartite central windows on each floor. There is an altered opening on the ground floor, with an original doorway featuring a decorative lintel to the left. This section is topped with a pediment that includes a clock face.
To the left of the main block is a two-storey extension built in a similar style in 1881, which has sash windows and a doorway with double-leafed doors. The building also has lower spinning sheds at the rear. This carefully detailed and monumental factory building was constructed for worsted spinning in the Leicester hosiery industry and serves as a landmark in this part of Leicester, overlooking the River Soar.
