Description

Stone Dam Mills is a steam-powered worsted spinning mill, now serving as a warehouse shop. It was constructed around 1836 and extended around 1855. The building is made of thin coursed sandstone and features a stone slate roof.

The mill stands five storeys tall, plus garrets. The south front has 18 windows, with those in the left end bay slightly set back at the stair tower. The original structure has 12 windows, while the left extension adds five more. The ground floor features an off-centre doorway, with eight windows to the left and six to the right. The first and second floors have 16 windows, including a former tall engine-house window on the right that has been divided into two windows with rusticated jambs. Above, there are 18 additional windows. The west gable wall has a projecting stair tower to the right, with a single central taking-in door on each floor.

The north front has 17 windows arranged in a pattern of 8:1:8, with a central projecting bay topped by a single round-headed garret window and gable. The fenestration is regular throughout, except for the east end, which features an in-built engine house lit by a single tall round-headed window with a rusticated surround that spans three floors. The east gable wall has three windows at the third and fourth floor levels, along with a single Venetian window in the gable.

Inside, the mill has wooden beams supporting timber floor joists and floors, along with central cast-iron columns. The original wooden roof remains intact. This worsted spinning mill was built for William Huntriss, who purchased the site in November 1836.
