GARDEN STREET NORTH Garden Mill Garden Street Mill

(Formerly listed as Garden Street Mill, GARDEN STREET NORTH)

II Former cotton mill. 1833 with minor C20 alterations and additions. Built for John Haigh and Brothers. Thin coursed hammer dressed sandstone with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. Ashlar coped gables and bracketed eaves. South front, five storeys plus attics, fourteen bays with the central four bays topped by a pediment containing a Venetian window. The second bay from the left now obscured by a projecting toilet block. Set back to the right a single bay engine house, with a tall rusticated round headed window, with a single window above. The four storey north front, also fourteen bays, has similar pediment topping central four bays not altered, many of the windows are loft doors with hoists, plus various additions. Interior construction has timber beams and floors supported on cast iron columns. Collar beam roof raised on cast iron brackets.
