Description
Garden Street Mill is a former cotton mill built in 1833, with minor alterations and additions made in the 20th century. It was constructed for John Haigh and Brothers and features thin coursed hammer dressed sandstone with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. The building has ashlar coped gables and bracketed eaves.
The south front has five storeys plus attics and consists of fourteen bays, with the central four bays topped by a pediment that contains a Venetian window. The second bay from the left is now obscured by a projecting toilet block. To the right, there is a single bay engine house set back, which features a tall rusticated round headed window with a single window above.
The north front, also four storeys and fourteen bays, has a similar pediment topping the central four bays, which remain unaltered. Many of the windows are loft doors with hoists, along with various additions. Inside, the construction includes timber beams and floors supported on cast iron columns, with a collar beam roof raised on cast iron brackets.
