Description

This barn, located approximately 40 metres south of Causeway Farmhouse, is believed to date from the 16th century and has been altered over time. It features a cruck frame and is currently clad in coursed sandstone rubble, likely replacing the original timber framing, with a slate roof. The barn has four bays aligned north-south, with a less significant shippon added at the southern end. On the west side, there is a wagon entrance to the third bay, which is protected by a porch with short cheeks and a carried-down roof. Various large outbuildings are attached but are not included in this description.

The north gable is weather-boarded, and below it is an attached lean-to garage or cart shed made of snecked sandstone. To the north of this structure, there is a long low range of four pigsties, featuring a monopitched roof of stone slates and random rubble walls with four doorways.

The most notable feature of the barn is its interior cruck frame, which consists of four full cruck trusses, including one at the north gable. These trusses have large scantling blades, collars, yokes, two pairs of spurs, and dorsals that support two pairs of trenched purlins, with curved windbraces both above and below. The gable end truss also includes a kingpost, although the tie-beam is not visible, and two angle struts near the apex. The ridge is positioned diagonally between the tops of the blades, which touch but are only joined by the yokes. In the second bay on the east side, remnants of timber-framed walling can be seen, including wall posts, high rails (below which the wall is now stone), and straight arch-bracing.
