Description

Hoghton Tower Viaduct is a railway viaduct that carries the Blackburn and Preston Railway over the River Darwen. It was built between 1844 and 1846, with Joseph Locke as the company engineer and T.W. Flanagan as the resident engineer. The viaduct is made of rock-faced sandstone and features three semi-circular spans, each measuring 65 feet, which rise from two rectangular piers situated in the deep gorge of the river. The track is elevated 116 feet above the river bed, and there is a corbel table along the parapet. The construction of the viaduct took 18 months, beginning with the laying of the first stone in December 1844.
