Description
Bolton Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with quoins and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a double-depth, two-bay plan and stands two storeys high with a symmetrical design, including gable chimneys.
The central entrance is a single-storey gabled porch with a side door and a single-light window in the front gable wall. On the first floor, there are two deeply-recessed, chamfered mullion three-light windows, with another three-light window at ground level to the right. A small square fire window is located near the right corner, and to the left of the porch is a formerly mullioned three-light window that has been altered to a casement. The left gable wall features one 19th-century window on each floor, including the attic.
At the rear, there is a central doorway, a four-light window to the right, and two three-light windows on the first floor. There is also a mono-pitch roofed extension at ground level of the second bay, which covers another window; all these windows are similar to those at the front.
Inside, the farmhouse has an unusual double-depth plan with very thick stone internal partition walls. Stone corbels support beams that have bead moulding, likely replacing the original features. The building is noted for its unique combination of an advanced double-depth plan and a symmetrical facade, alongside a conservative window style typically found in early 17th-century architecture.
