Description

Alum Scar Bridge is a bridge that carries an old road across Alum House Brook. Its date is unknown, but it is probably a 19th-century replacement of an older bridge. The structure is made of roughly-dressed sandstone blocks and has rubble abutments. It features a high segmental-headed arch set in a deep ravine, with buttressed side walls between the abutments that appear to be older. The middle of the parapets has rounded coping. The old road may be linked to a former alum mine located about 200 meters to the south, which was visited by King James I in 1617. The west side of the bridge is situated in Samlesbury Civil Parish, South Ribble District.
