Description

This is an orangery situated in the grounds of Woodfold Hall. It dates from the early to mid-19th century. The structure is constructed with brick walls faced with sandstone ashlar, and has an iron-framed glass roof. The orangery is seven bays long by four bays wide, with the three central bays on the south side projecting forward as a bow. Windows are fitted with horned sash windows containing glazing bars. The bays are divided by engaged columns on the south side and pilasters on the other sides. These columns and pilasters have a carved band above their capitals, stand on pedestals, and support an entablature. The interior walls between and above the windows incorporate wooden panelling. Very slim iron columns rise between each bay to the roof, the outer part of which is coved and meets a central rectangular lantern. The building is now derelict, with part of the roof collapsed and all the glass broken. It was originally marked on the 1847 Ordnance Survey map as a “Hot House".
