Description

Higher Twist Field Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely from the 17th century, with alterations made around 1800, now functioning as a house. It is constructed from whitewashed sandstone rubble with quoins and has a corrugated sheet roof featuring a single ridge chimney. The building has a rectangular three-bay plan with a passage behind the stack, and it probably started as a single-storey longhouse.

The farmhouse has two storeys, with the upper level of the walls noticeably set back and lacking quoins. A modern single-storey kitchen is attached to the center of the front. To the right of the kitchen is a chamfered doorway, with a matching doorway in the rear wall opposite it. To the left at ground floor, there are two horizontal rectangular windows with chamfered surrounds, which were likely originally two and three light mullioned windows. At the right end, a former doorway is now blocked and mostly hidden by external stone steps leading to a first-floor loft door, with an inserted window to the left of the steps.

On the first floor, there are two windows: one square and the other altered or inserted. At the rear, in addition to the chamfered doorway, there is a two-light flush-mullion window in the third bay, a small window that may have been mullioned to the right of this, two altered ground floor windows, and two square first floor windows.

Inside, the housepart in the middle bay features a large inglenook with a heck, a chamfered bressummer supporting two chamfered beams, and a fireplace with stone jambs that have moulded shoulders.
