Description
Tongue Hill Farmhouse, now a house, dates from 1735, as indicated by the inscription above the door. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with quoins, and has a stone slate roof with a chimney on the ridge where the first and second bays meet, and further chimneys at each gable. The building is rectangular, with a three-bay plan. The front has a low floor band, and the doorway, positioned between the second and third bays, features a simple ashlar surround with a moulded cornice within the floor band. Above the doorway is a square datestone with a moulded surround, inscribed "P", and the date 1735. There are three four-light windows on each floor. These windows are recessed and have hollow-chamfered mullions. The left return wall has a single-storey lean-to addition and a similar four-light window with a hoodmould on the first floor. The rear elevation features a floor band and windows matching those at the front. The ground floor has four windows of 3, 2, 2, and 3 lights respectively, while the first floor has two two-light windows with hoodmoulds. A stairwell window and a smaller window are situated between the first-floor windows. Inside, the ground floor rooms have quarter-round moulded beams, with further beams in the roof. A longitudinal partition suggests a six-room plan, with the rear rooms being smaller.
