Description
Walk Mill Bridge is a bridge over the River Darwen, likely built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone and features a single arch with different designs on the north and south sides. The north side is made of squared sandstone blocks with simple rusticated voussoirs forming the arch and flat pilasters at each end. In contrast, the south side is finished in ashlar and has a more elaborate design, with an extrados to the arch made of splayed voussoirs extending up to a band, and more prominent pilasters on each side. Both sides have parapets with ridged coping, and the south side curves around at the west end to a cylindrical pier, which serves as a pedestal for one of the piers of the gateway to Feniscowles Hall. The more decorative treatment on the south side was likely intended to enhance the appearance of the north drive leading to Feniscowles Hall, although it is now largely hidden by a sewer pipe.
