Description

Vale House Farmhouse is a house, now functioning as a farmhouse, dating from the late 18th century, though it may have earlier origins and has been altered over time. It is constructed of watershot coursed sandstone with quoins, featuring a stone slate roof at the rear and a slate roof, along with brick chimney stacks at the gables. The building has a double-depth, three-bay plan and stands three storeys tall with a symmetrical façade. Notable architectural features include a first-floor band, eaves brackets, and a central glazed and panelled door topped by a shallow rectangular three-pane fanlight. The ground floor has two four-pane sashed windows, while the first floor has three, most of which are adorned with splayed stone heads. The second floor contains three small six-pane sashes. The left gable wall features two four-pane sashes at the ground floor, and the right gable wall has three windows at the ground floor and two at the first floor, one of which is blind. The rear of the house includes a doorway with a plain surround, above which is a tall two-stage stairlight with a flat flush mullion and transom, each light containing three panes. At the second floor, there are two two-light flush mullion windows, each with six panes, and a single-storey extension at the rear of the third bay. The interior comprises 19 rooms, including four cellars. Historically, the farmhouse is associated with the de Hoghton family of Hoghton Tower and was said to have been built as a gentleman's residence, although the farmhouse itself has now been demolished.
