Description
The Hoghton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1924, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of limestone.
The monument features a wayside cross on an octagonal shaft, which stands on a plinth and a four-stepped base. Each square step has a segmental central projection and chamfered nosing, with the upper step displaying a hollow chamfer. The square plinth transitions to an octagonal shape, adorned with decorative finials at the corners. The shaft has a moulded foot and is slightly fluted, with ring mouldings at its capital. A square shrine, supported by four angels, has a pitched roof with sprocketed eaves and angle buttresses.
The shrine faces east towards Hoghton Tower and features a crucifixion surrounded by cusped tracery. The north and south faces have blind cusped tracery and a shield with garlands, while the west face includes a niche with cusped tracery and a statue of St George.
Each face of the plinth has a slate plaque with inscriptions carved in relief. The eastern plaque reads "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HOGHTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR A.D. 1914 – 1918 (3 NAMES)." The north face lists names for the years 1916 (1 NAME), 1917 (2 NAMES), and 1918 (2 NAMES). The south face includes 1918 (6 NAMES), 1919 (2 NAMES), and "DIED OF WOUNDS 1923." The west face commemorates those who fell in the Second World War, stating "AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF HOGHTON WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR A.D. 1939 – 1945 (3 NAMES) THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM."
The memorial is set on a circular area of setts, with a cobbled rear bank that descends to a semi-circular path and a low stone wall featuring hog’s-back copings, punctuated by square pillars. The front boundary is defined by hexagonal stone bollards.
