Description
3 Chapel Fold is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, which incorporates part of a much earlier and larger cruck-framed structure. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone with quoins and red brick, topped with a slate roof featuring gable chimneys. It has three bays, with an outshut at the rear of the first bay. The house is two storeys tall; the left half of the front is made of stone, while the right half is red brick, all resting on a stone base. There is a plain doorway with a rectangular lintel located at the junction of the first and second bays, and three large chamfered mullion windows on each floor, with the centre window having two lights and the others having three lights. The left gable features a two-light window on the first floor, while the right gable is covered with scored render and has protruding purlin ends, indicating that the building has been shortened at this end. The rear is mostly stone but constructed in different styles and courses, featuring six irregularly placed windows; those in the outshut and centre all have two lights with mullions.
Inside, the second and third bays contain two full cruck trusses with exceptionally large scantling blades, spurs to the wallposts, and curved windbraces to the purlins. The central truss includes post and rail framing. The first bay, which appears to be a later addition, has a blocked 18th-century stone fireplace with a corbelled lintel and an exposed moulded cornice. The history of the building is not well documented, but it may have been converted from a barn.
